Finding your perfect wedding photographer is tough, so I want to help!

Choosing a wedding photographer is one of the biggest decisions to make when planning your dream wedding. I remember when my wife and I were planning our own wedding....finding the perfect wedding photographer was seriously hard! I will try my best to offer a little bit of advice to assist you.

Choosing the right wedding photographer….for you

There are thousands of wedding photographers out there, so what are the key things you should consider when selecting a wedding photographer? Personally, I believe it boils down to 3 key questions:

1. Do you like the style and approach of the photographer?

It is important to choose a photographer that delivers the experience you want on your big day. What do I mean by this? Well for example, if you are camera shy, you probably don’t want to choose a photographer who’s style is to capture lots of carefully posed and planned photographs. Another example would be if you want a low key and relaxed wedding experience, you probably don’t want a wedding photographer that approaches the day by using a team of photographers and lighting assistants. There are many different styles and approaches to wedding photography, you need to decide what best matches both of your personalities and the meets the goals you want from your wedding day.

2. Do you like the look and feel of the photographs?

How a photographer captures, curates and processes their pictures is very personal and varies greatly from photographer to photographer. Take the time to really look through photographer’s portfolio of favourite pictures or watch slideshows and videos (or in my case photo stories!). Consider why you like the photograph, is it because of the way in which it is composed, because of the subject, or because of the mood and feeling? Or do you just simply love the brides dress 😃 Then consider how the image has been processed, are the colours muted or vibrant, are they all black and white or are they all colour (or are they a mixture)? You can use this to work out what type of mood and feel you want to convey in your wedding photographs, and then choose a photographer that can deliver that vision for you.

3. Do you actually like the person behind the camera?

This one if often overlooked! You probably spend more time in the company of your wedding photographer during your wedding day than you do most of your guests, so choosing someone you actually get along with is really important. If you have the opportunity, I would definitely recommend a face to face meeting with your potential wedding photographer before booking. If you can't make a face to face meeting, try a video or telephone call. Not only does this give you the opportunity to ask as many questions as you like, it also enables you to gauge whether you get along with them and want to spend time around them on your big day.

So....am I the right photographer for you?

I can't answer that I'm afraid! But hopefully by the time you are reading this page you may have read about my approach to documenting weddings. Maybe you will have taken a look at my portfolio or viewed one of my wedding photo stories to get an idea of how my photographs look and feel. And perhaps you will have found out a bit more about me personally. So you should be able to look at the points I have raised above and have a good idea if I am the right photographer for you.
