Photographic beginnings

Let me tell you a little more about myself and how I ended up becoming a documentary wedding and portrait photographer.

For as long as I can remember, I have always loved taking pictures. When I was a child, I remember nagging my mum and dad for my own camera so I could take pictures of the wildlife down at the local nature reserve. A few years later I went on to study art and film photography at school, where I spent hours and hours in the darkroom learning all about the craft of photography.

After leaving school, I knew that I wanted to become a photographer but I was never quite sure how I was going to turn my hobby into a career. That was, until a very important day in my life….my own wedding day!

Launching my business

It was one of those lightbulb moments. Up until that point, my photographic interest had been focused on landscape and travel photography. Even though I’d consider myself a people person I had never really considered wedding or portrait photography before! I dedicated all of my spare time to learn everything I could about photographing people. In 2013, Michael Wright Photography was born!

Refining my wedding style

After launching my wedding photography business and shooting a few weddings in a more traditional style, I soon realised that my real passion was in capturing real and unposed moments throughout the wedding day. This was when I made the decision to focus on a style of wedding photography called documentary wedding photography. This style of photography has become very popular over recent years, especially in the UK. In the digital age we live in, we are all very familiar with having our photographs taken and many of us, including myself, have become a little self-conscious when ‘posing’ in front of a camera. So if you don’t like having your photograph taken, I may well be the photographer for you! To find out if this style of wedding photography is right for you, head over to the about you page.

The man behind the camera

I was very fortunate to grow up in Weymouth on the beautiful Dorset coast, which is where I still live with my amazing wife and our awesome son. To be honest with you, I’m a fairly typical bloke. I love sports and movies. I have a pretty broad sense of humour and I try not to take life too seriously. Travelling is definitely one of my passions and I would love to see a lot more of the world, taking photographs as I go. I definitely overuse the word awesome and I put far too many exclamation marks in everything that I write, as you can see!
