What is engagement photography?

Engagement photography is absolutely huge in the US and is now becoming really big in the UK. As a documentary wedding photographer (also sometimes known as photojournalism or reportage photography), I don’t put a huge emphasis on capturing highly posed photographs of my couples on their wedding day itself. Instead I concentrate on capturing real and unposed moments throughout the day.

However, perhaps you’d like some nice formal photographs of the two of you at a great location that might not be possible on the wedding day itself? Or maybe you are like me and are a little self conscious in front of the camera and you’d like to spend an hour or so getting used to having your photograph taken? This is where an engagement shoot can be absolutely ideal!

The engagement shoot

We normally start off the session just getting to know each other a little better and I will talk to you both about posing and posture. We’ll then try out a few different poses/looks to see what works best for you and generally just get you both relaxed in front of the camera. Taking what you’ve learned, we’ll then crank it up a notch and use some creative techniques to produce some awesome shots of the two of you!

I usually let my clients suggest the location of the shoot and I recommend choosing a location that means something to you both. Maybe that’s the beach, or the forest, or the location of your first date? It’s not always possible, but I think it adds a little something extra to the pictures and makes them more personal and meaningful to you.
